AOL
AOL is probably one of the most recognisable and used providers out at the moment. Although not the cheapest I think it%u2019s because they are so well known that people go to them. I have to say that as a provider they aren%u2019t too bad, it%u2019s just the software you have to load to get onto AOL that causes the problems. I wasn%u2019t with them for long as there software caused problems with a few of my programs, most serious of which was Norton. If I wanted to get onto the AOL home page I had to disable Norton but if I wanted to buy anything I had to re-enable Norton and then couldn%u2019t get onto the AOL home page.
I am not the only one to have this problem, in fact I should thank them because at the moment I am getting quite a lot of work from people who own Norton and use AOL. Most have tried to sort it out by calling AOL but eventually have to get me to call to their house to sort it out for them. It%u2019s a shame really because if you did away with AOL software it would be a good provider. One house I went to had trouble getting online so I went to fix it. I got it going wirelessly and then tried the computer upstairs and connected to the Internet without any AOL software on there. The one upstairs had no problems and was so much faster even though it was the same spec. Unfortunately AOL don%u2019t give you the option of just installing the net and leaving their software off.
For people like myself who would rather go straight to a web page or use Google AOL is a pain. You start off on their webpage, instead of having internet explorer on the task bar you have AOL explorer and even changing the homepage on the internet options you still end up at AOL. I have had to fix so many machines now because the call centre people don%u2019t seem to be able to sort out the problems that I would advise against AOL. The calls aren%u2019t cheap and 9 times out of ten either the people on the phone can%u2019t understand you or you can%u2019t understand them and it will remain offline until you get someone to help you.
The cost again isn%u2019t great as you still have to pay BT line rental, you even have this with BT broadband.
This brings us nicely to one of the easiest providers, BT. This is easier because you then get all your bills in one including the line rental.
